As a group we’d already had had discussions about the idea being in a brief like structure and some sort of workshop or class or something along the lines. With that in mind I wanted to look at the idea and structure of a brief.
I looked at some of the briefs we’ve been given across the year and looked at the structure and content of each briefs. I wanted to gain a better understanding of what our idea would entail, were we looking at producing a final body of work, what were our deliverables and how would the course work?
The idea of a brief is to explain the subject, the deliverables, the process in which it’s marked, in the case of our university briefs, but looking at the structure of a brief allowed me to gain a better understanding of our own idea as well as the design of the brief, must the brief be so formal? Is the traditional idea of a brief something that we need to take on board, can we experiment with that? Would the visual identity of our idea communicate the idea without the need for a brief?
I looked more into other workshops that are incredibly popular in Leeds such as Drink and Draw. I wanted to look at the actual workshops to find out how popular they are and how they’re structured. Drink and draw is a perfect example of a workshop that is popular, local and encourages creativeness. We wanted to try ecourage the same type of creativeness and experimentation with our workshop that would hopefully inspire students to practice the same creative process in their own time and create their own body of work outside of university, while giving them a taster of things they can expect on the undergrad course if they choose to progress.
I looked more into workshops and found the Experimental workshop. This project interested me not because of the subject but because of its documentation. The way this workshop is documented and the way it uses repetition are something interesting. If we implement a similar sort of documentation or repetition in our workshops would that inform the final outcome of the project? Would the workshop benefit from this sort of repetition and process?
I wanted to look at the visual branding of our idea and how it would look. I wanted to put forward a simple visual identity, something stripped back and de-cluttered that would grab the viewers’ attention but be subtle. We wanted to reflect whatever we wanted to create in the workshop but communicate our idea confidently. I looked at 101’s rebrand. Although this is branding for an agency it reflected the style I wanted to try and push with our own workshop branding. I felt mixed use of typography, simple and clean colour schemes worked really well. The Branding is fresh, bold and vibrant but never to harsh. I wanted to implement some of the typography work and simple colour schemes into our brand.
