I collected a number of designers/studios that interest me and that I already follow that i would like to interview and get an insight into the way they work. I narrowed down my focus and picked out some initial studios/creatives I intended to reach out to with my questions. I very briefly outlined my idea for my report and what I wanted my questions to based around.
Forth and Back Studio - Los Angeles, California, USA
Frank Wo Studio - Tallinn, Estonia
Estonia based designer Frank Wo is another designer i've followed for a very long time. I love his work and his typographic focus to design and branding work. I love his work as its a similar style to the one I like to work in. His work is very type focused, with lots of negative space and neutral colour schemes, they're a simple, minimal and clean approach to design.
Collins Studio - New York and San Francisco, USA
NY and SFO based Studio Collins is one the largest studios I follow with 38 employees and two studio spaces in the U.S. The studio is best known for their works with Spotify, Target, Nike, Tribeca Film Festival and one of my favourites and one of the most 'out there' rebrand projects, Dropbox. Their style throughout their work is one I like to work in and their design field is a perfect example of the field I want to progress into.
Creative Boom - Manchester, UK
Creative Boom is a creative magazine based in Manchester. I looked into CB as something a bit different. As I was mainly focused on studio that specify in graphic design, branding design and styles similar my own I decided to mix it up and look into CB. I was interested to ask the same style of questions to CB as everyone else and to hear what responses they had and how different or similar their responses were, as almost curators of pieces across many creative disciplines. I thought the possibility of exploring something that wasn't as closely related to my practice have been interesting, especially with their experience with various disciplines.
ItsNiceThat - London, UK
ItsNiceThat are a company much like Creative Boom, but with a website, bi-annual magazine and talks held every Tuesday that are based in London. I had the same thought process I had looking at Creative Boom, I thought the idea of reaching out to someone that covers a broad range of disciplines would be interesting and would get different responses, not necessarily from inside the bubble of graphic and branding design.
Manuel Ridocci - UK and Madrid
Manuel Ridocci is a UK and Madrid based designer and is someone i admire in terms of his style. I love his type focused, negative space heavy work as it's a style i like to work in. I love his work on Studio Banana and the use of typography, image and negative space in his La Bande Son work. Working in a style similar to that of mine, or a style i aspire to get better at I thought his responses to my questions would be interesting. I wanted to know with a style that minimal whether he as a designer needed to adapt to his clients as well as his clients having to adapt to his often at times, quite radical minimalist design.
