Studio Brief Three - Presentation Text

My Presentation consists of brief, shortened version of the subjects and structure of this text. I condensed the presentation down to the points i think are the most important and plan on using some of this text as talking points that elaborate on the text that's seen on the presentation.

This presentation aims to reflect on my time on the course and outline my personal aspirations for the rest of my time here and my progression as a creative.

The course has allowed me to start to develop my style and understand which direction I wish to take my work. I’d say I’m developing a clear minimalist style of design, with a focus on typography. I feel my style has benefited from my time on the course and the critical analysis of my tutors and peers of the course. I feel I’ve grown as a designer and learnt a lot on the course. I feel my work is better informed by research, rules and styles and I’ve learnt how to better justify my work.

Upon reflection, I’ve found my time on the course has had many ups and downs. I’ve enjoyed the majority of the work I’ve produced in level 5 of the course, with level 4 being my least enjoyable year due to the lack of creative freedom compared to level 5.

I hate Collage. I hate it, I can’t stand it, I agree with the idea that everyone works and learn differently. Throughout level 4 there was a constant push for idea development via collage, and I hated it. I understand the reasoning, idea and process the technique tried to implement, but felt my work (not necessarily my development) was at its worst, whenever collage was implemented, my final outcome I was usually unhappy with.

Level 4 I initially found difficult, it took me a while to get to grips with the pace and demand of the course, in the end being happy with my overall result, but not feeling happy with the majority of work I produced, which for me should be the main goal, producing work you’re confident in.

Level 5 has been far more enjoyable and allows far more creative freedom. I’ve enjoyed nearly all briefs in this course and enjoyed the freedom to produce something how we want. I’ve struggled this year with the research side of the course, with my grades not as high as I hoped they would be. I’m aware I need to improve.

My favourite module so far has been the responsive. The work I produced for Skylights band and SAR architects I was proud with and really enjoyed working with both clients. It was enjoyable working in a way that encourage live briefs, communication and a way that is more like something I may see as a creative after university.

What do I want for the future?

Going forward I’m still unsure as to which direction I wish to go. In an ideal world I’d like to go freelance but am aware that financially it cant always be viable. I love the idea of trying to create or become a part of a small studio set up, This latest module has allowed me to speak to various creatives In that sort of setup, and I like the idea and dynamic of a studio of that size and the freedom and opportunities it can possibly give you. I’ve been interesting in branding design throughout my time at university and that hasn’t changed. I feel the best work I produce is branding related and I really enjoy that specific discipline.
